Thigpen Elementary was named in honor of Zara Thigpen a former principal at McAllen’s Roosevelt School. Zavala Elementary was named after the intellect , Lorenzo De Zavala, who had many contributions that helped shape Texas. For many years, these two McAllen ISD schools stood side by side in the heart of McAllen. Many great memories live in the hearts of the Thigpen Chihuahuas and the Zavala Koalas.
In 2007, a brand new building taking the name Thigpen-Zavala was opened and ready to serve the community’s educational needs. Thigpen-Zavala continues to be a legacy of excellence. Go Hawks!
